Lawn Aeration

Core Aeration

Technically speaking, Aeration is the naturally occurring process of air exchange between the soil and its surrounding atmosphere.  Practically speaking, aeration is the process of mechanically removing small plugs of thatch and soil from the lawn to improve the flow of air, water, and nutrients.  The aeration process is also called CORE AERATION in the lawn service industry, and homeowners often refer to it as AERATION.

 Lawn Core Aeration Benefits:

  • Saves up to 50% on Water!!!
  • Reduces water run-off and puddling.
  • Improves turfgrass rooting
  • REDUCES SOIL COMPACTION
  • Enhances heat and drought stress tolerance.
  • Improves turfgrass resiliency and cushioning.
  • ENHANCES THATCH BREAKDOWN.
When should lawns be aerated?

Like getting your teeth cleaned, lawn aeration is one of those annual or biannual lawn maintenance activities that improve the total health of your lawn.  Lawns growing on heavy clay and exposed to intense use can benefit from biannual aeration.  Bermuda lawns can be aerated anytime during the growing season. (March - October)
Core Aeration prior to overseeding with ryegrass (October - November) can improve rooting and provide a top dressing for seed germination.

What to expect after Core Aeration?

Immediately following aeration, your lawn will be dotted with small plugs - approximately 3" in length.  DO NOT REMOVE THE CORES FROM YOUR LAWN.  Following normal watering schedules and the intense effects of Arizona's sun, these plugs will break apart and disappear into the lawn.   About 7-10 days after aeration, the cores will begin to break apart and the aerification holes will begin to be filled with white, actively growing roots.  IMPORTANT TIP: We recommend that you do NOT mow your lawn for 7-10 days following core aeration.  This gives your lawn ample time to recover and the remaining dirt plugs/cores will be vacuumed during your mowing.
